Statistics Matter

Accurate statistics are an essential basis upon which to build and plan for a fair society

They make for good policy because they provide a vital source of evidence upon which good and effective policy thought is built – they yield better policies. By providing evidence that can be measured and that we arrive at through a clear method and process, statistics also allow for policy makers to be held accountable, and for policy shapers to be assessed, all of which are important ingredients in a healthy democracy. They are an essential basis upon which to build and plan for a fair society at all levels of governance and delivery.

    Area of Work

The internet has made statistics much more accessible than ever before. Facts and figures that were once locked within pages of reference guides (which normally could not be taken out of public libraries) are now available at the touch of our fingertips – every British citizen has more facts and figures at the computer screen than the Prime Minister would have had easy access to just twenty years ago! And they are available in graphical forms allowing for easier analysis.

The Census 2011 will provide the first reliable, officially sourced basis to identify social, economic and population trends where data and information on social change measured by ethnicity, gender, age and area can also be analysed by religion. This is because it will be the first time a picture of Britain’s religious make up can be compared to like for like information from the previous census, that is, the results of the Census 2001 (which included a question on religion for the first time). To enable a current analysis of trends by religion, and to be able to cross analyse such information with data collated by, say, ethnicity or where people live, it is also important to make the results of the Census 2001’s findings on religion and people more accessible and clear.

In this section you can view key facts and figures to help provide a fact based picture of British Muslims primarily from the Census 2001. It is an aid in assessing the causal factors, impact and effects of the social position of the different demographic segments that together make up Britain’s Muslims. We will update this section with the findings of the Census 2011; we expect the tabled results to be released in Spring 2012. We are working to add new areas to this section and where we can, we will also provide links for further and more detailed information to help place the figures in perspective and enhance analysis. If you would like to discuss this section or have any other interest in the statistical position of British Muslims, why not contact us.
